This week, several conferences around the nation will present their annual football media previews. The SEC is staging its event in Birmingham, Alabama. The Big Ten is in Chicago on Thursday. Conference USA is in Memphis.
With that in mind, here are some of the names being circulated as key players to watch in the upcoming Heisman Trophy race (in alphabetical order):
CHASE DANIEL – Missouri quarterback
The Tigers quarterback will have a great deal of support going into the season. It could help if his Tigers could win at Texas in October and he plays well. Too many things however, have to go right, for him to stay in the Heisman race.
MATTHEW STAFFORD – Georgia quarterback
Stafford is young, but he keeps getting better and better. If Georgia plays undefeated and remains in the hunt for a national championship Stafford will be a serious contender.
TIM TEBOW – Florida quarterback
Tebow won the award last fall as a sophomore. That means the odds are against him winning this season. Only Archie Griffin of Ohio State has won it twice. Tebow might have a better season and his team might have a better year, yet he will most likely not win the award.
CHRIS WELLS – Ohio State running back
His nickname is “Beanie” and he’s become a force in college football. He was the Buckeye’s brightest light in last winter’s BCS title game—a powerful back who runs behind a good offensive line. Wells needs to play well early on the road at USC.
PAT WHITE – West Virginia quarterback
If he has a good year throwing the football White may become the first Mountaineer player to win the award. His team has a chance to go undefeated which will help him.
